Starfield Day 1 Mods

Recently, AMD disclosed a unique collaboration with Bethesda, exclusively integrating its FSR 2 technology into Starfield, sidelining NVIDIA’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS.

Update 06/29/2023: Modder PureDark, acclaimed for introducing DLSS to Jedi Survivor, has committed to developing a mod that brings DLSS support to Starfield before the culmination of its Early Access phase.

AMD’s announcement via a YouTube video, which stated that Starfield’s performance is tailored for the AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors and Radeon 7000 series graphics cards, has raised eyebrows. Those equipped with Intel processors and NVIDIA graphics cards are now wary about how Starfield might perform on their setups.

Bethesda’s exclusive collaboration with AMD for Starfield implies that the game will inherently support AMD’s FSR 2 upscaling tech, purposed to enhance visual quality and game performance.

Yet, past games, such as Jedi Survivor, that exclusively employed AMD’s FSR 2, stumbled upon significant performance issues during their initial release. This exclusive AMD alignment for Starfield has sparked worries among the gaming community. They fear that Starfield might replicate these launch hiccups, especially in the absence of innate support for NVIDIA and Intel configurations.

In the case of Jedi Survivor, the modder PureDark added NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 support via a mod, substantially enhancing the game’s performance. Thus, many in the Starfield community are optimistic that modders might step in to integrate support for NVIDIA’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS if AMD and Bethesda refrain.

While FSR 2 does gel with a majority of contemporary graphics cards, it might not match the prowess of solutions from AMD’s rivals. Tech journalist Tom Warren of The Verge remarked, “DLSS greatly outperforms FSR 2, so the choice by Microsoft/Bethesda to exclusively side with AMD and exclude DLSS from Starfield is baffling.”

Traditionally, games under AMD’s exclusive umbrella have not extended support for DLSS or XeSS. This pattern has drawn criticism, with many speculating that Starfield might also be denied such support. Nevertheless, AMD hasn’t closed the door on the potential inclusion of Intel’s XeSS and NVIDIA’s DLSS in Starfield upon its release.

Given the adverse reactions online, AMD may revisit their stance and clarify whether Starfield will accommodate its competition upon release.

For now, players should ensure their systems meet Starfield’s requirements. They can also secure their game by pre-ordering the standard or Constellation edition or avail of attractive offers through the Xbox Game Pass.
