Take More Traits

Anyone else think it’s an odd game design choice to make New Game+ such a big part of this game, but then one of the few things you still have to keep between playthroughs is your character’s traits and background? I mean, I get why they made that decision story-wise, but it kinda feels pointless to play the game in NG+ when you can’t even explore how different traits and backgrounds change the experience for you. Like the only thing there really is to do in NG+ is rush through the main story again while you grind up your powers and maybe see the handful of variations on your first meeting with Constellation.

This mod doesn’t fix that. It doesn’t even try. But if you want to see all the ways the different traits will affect your game without having to run a bunch of different characters since you can only choose three traits when you create them… then this is the mod for you. See, there’s a game setting that can be tinkered with that determines how many traits you can put on your character. By default, that’s three. Now, I can’t make any of the mutually exclusive traits (the religion traits, the hometown traits, introvert/extrovert, and spaced/terra firma) no longer be mutually exclusive, but I can crank that number of traits you can put on your character up to 11. Which, ironically enough, is how many you can take with one of everything and one of each of those mutually exclusive trait groups.

A few things to note:
First, this mod REALLY only works when you’re starting a new game and creating a new character. You COULD call up the showlooksmenu with the console mid-game and give yourself more traits, if you don’t mind resetting your character’s appearance, or you COULD use console commands and add the traits that way. However, some of the traits probably aren’t going to work right. Hero Worshipped, Dream Home, and Kid Stuff, in particular, have quests attached to them, and I’m not entirely sure how to trigger those quests myself (a couple other mods seem to have it figured out, though). I’m also not sure how to get the chests that Raised Enlightened and Raised Universal are supposed to spawn to spawn. Maybe it’s because I’m using a save where I’ve already been to New Atlantis, maybe they have quests attached to them, too, I don’t really know. But if you start a new game with all the traits, they should all work just fine.

Second, when you’re in the character creation menu, and you’re on the traits page, it will only show the top three as your selected traits, however, you’ll still be able to check off as many traits as you want (assuming you’re not choosing mutually exclusive traits). Check the screenshot I uploaded to see what I mean. When you close out the character creator, and open your main menu, and go to the player section, it’ll show as having all the traits, and they’ll all be active.

Third, if I can find a setting that lets you choose more than one background, I’m gonna add that as an option as well. Though, to be honest, it isn’t necessary. Unlike traits, backgrounds only affect dialog choices and adds the three starting skills it comes with. You can add those with console commands pretty easily and they’ll work without any issues. Maybe I’ll add some bat files that will make it easy for anyone like me who’s roleplaying a character with more than a simple backstory. That’s the main reason I’m using this setting, at least.

Basically, this just lets you select more than three traits. That’s it.

Install it just like any other sStartingConsoleCommand bat:
– Extract takemoretraits.txt to your install folder (../Steam/steamapps/common/Starfield)
– Edit or create StarfieldCustom.ini in your My Games folder (../Documents/My Games/Starfield)
– Make sure you have Archive Invalidation set up
– Add the following lines to your .ini file:

[General]
sStartingConsoleCommand=bat takemoretraits
